Ideal Boiler Showing L2? Here's What You Can Try
Woken up to find your Ideal boiler showing an L2 code and no heating? Don't worry - you're not alone, and there are a few simple things you can check yourself before calling us out. The L2 code basically means your boiler tried to light but couldn't get the flame going. Let's walk through some quick checks you can do safely at home.
⚠️⚠️ Safety First
If you smell gas at any point, don't touch anything. Turn off your gas at the meter if it's safe to do so, open windows, and call the National Gas Emergency number: 0800 111 999. Then give us a call once it's safe.
1Quick Checks You Can Do Yourself
Simple Things to Try First
Check Your Gas is Actually On
This might sound obvious, but it's worth checking! Try turning on your gas hob or another gas appliance. If nothing else is working either, you might have a gas supply issue - give your gas supplier a call.
💡 Tip: Your hob should light normally if gas is flowing
Look for a Frozen White Pipe Outside
Pop outside and look for a white plastic pipe coming from your boiler (usually about 1-2 inches thick). In cold weather, this can freeze up. If you find ice on it, carefully pour some warm (not boiling!) water from a kettle over the frozen bit. This often does the trick!
💡 Tip: Warm water from the kettle works great - just let it cool a tiny bit first
⚠️ Warning: Never use boiling water as it can crack the pipe
Try Resetting Your Boiler
Look for a reset button on your boiler (it usually has a flame symbol or says "reset"). Hold it for a few seconds until you hear the boiler trying to fire up. Sometimes that's all it needs!
💡 Tip: Check your boiler manual if you can't find the reset button
⚠️ Warning: If you have to reset it more than twice, give us a call - something else is going on
Check Your Boiler Pressure
Have a look at the pressure gauge on your boiler (the dial with numbers, usually 0-4). The needle should be in the green zone, typically between 1 and 1.5. If it's too low, your boiler won't fire up.
💡 Tip: Your manual shows how to top up pressure, or we can talk you through it
⚠️ Warning: If pressure keeps dropping, you might have a leak - call us
